Childhood Obesity

What do you think are some reasons for childhood obesity in America? What can/should be done about it? Where does the responsibility lie for changing this?

  1. I believe a lot of the blame goes to technology. Childrens games are getting more advanced and many of the new games require little or no physical activities. For example no one rides bikes anymore, they all have motorized scooters. Vidio games also could be helping make our children fat. Another factor that may be contributing is that not many mothers stay at home anymore. This may cause a family to eat out more due to the fact that mom doesnt have enough time to make a home cooked meal.

As far as what should be done is I think we need to stop spoiling our children so much with motorized scooters and vidio games, get them a football, take them swimming. Do family activities together on the weekends. Also try not to eat out so much. I know it can be hard for mom to cook a meal every night so maybe switch between mom and dad or even the oldest child.

  2. Do agree that along with working parents not having as much time to cook meals, they may buy their children those electric scooters and video games out of guilt or something to keep the kids occupied while the parents aren't home?

  3. I think one of the main reasons that American children are becoming obese is because of all of the fast food places where they eat all of the time. I agree that it is much easier to go and grab something from McDonalds instead of making a home cooked meal, but American families are starting to do it more and more all of the time. Parents are working more all of the time so fast food is an easy way out. I agree with Jessica that technology also has a huge impact on this issue. Kids play video games all of the time. Kids hardly even spend any time outside anymore which is the best form of exercise for them. One thing that would be nice to change is the amount of fast food commercials on TV. Also I think the responsibility for this issue goes back to the parents. I understand that parents are busy so it's easier to tell your kids to go watch TV instead of playing outside, but parents need to find more time to take their kids outdoors, and to make sure that their kids are getting healthy food along with a lot of exercise.

  4. I think that Americans are obese is because we have so many fast food joints, snack shops, and quicky marts. Parents are so busy they just pick up something quick. This wouldn't be a problem if it only happened once in a while but people get into these bad habits and they neglect to eat balanced meals. Not only do we have to fight off the temptations of fast food we also have to be carefull so they we're not just sitting in front of the tv playing video games. I think the responsibility lies on the parents. It's not the fast food companies fault that the kids eat too many chicken nuggets.

  5. I also agree that technology is part of the problem. Over half of my moms daycare kids have DS's, and thats all I ever see them playing they hardly ever play with each other like what I did when I was little. I think that alot of times parents buy their kids these games because they don't want to have to hear them or deal with them so they get these games to keep them occupied. I think this is a problem because then the kids don't want to go outside and play or just play with other kids like they would if they didn't have the DS's.

I also think that kids are eating way to much fast food. Alot of times parents don't feel like cooking after work so they just either go out to eat or bring home food for their kids after work. And after awhile of eating the fast food thats all the kids want and they become picky and only wanting to eat that unhealthy McDonalds.

  6. I also believe the reason for childhood obesity is the advancement of technology. There are so many games that you can get kids these days. You can buy them WII's, playstations, DS'S, or anything else you can think of. I believe that parents are to blame for this. They are the ones who are buying their children all of these new toys. They feel that if they can get their kids busy for a little while then they themselves will have more time to thereselves. The responsibility lies in the parents hands to change this. If they don't want their child to grow up obese then they should do something about it.
